Cub Scout Adult Training
Training is important because every youth deserves a trained leader. The Boy Scouts of America provide a seamless training program that helps leaders graduate through their courses quickly, easily, and with little duplication, and provides the district training committee with tools to achieve 100 percent trained unit volunteers. This program begins with Fast Start training, continues with This Is Scouting, then follows up with leader-specific training for each adult’s role in the unit. The first three of these trainings are available online so as to be done from the comfort from your own home. Visit myscouting.org and create a new account to start your training today.
In addition to required trainings for each adult leader supplemental training is also available. Training sessions held at our monthly Roundtable meeting are open to all attendees regardless of whether they are registered unit leader or not.
Basic Training
After completing the following training courses, an adult Cub Scout leader earns the “trained” strip.
Youth Protection (online/class). Renew every two years.
Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. To maintain such an environment, the BSA developed numerous procedural and leadership selection policies and provides parents and leaders with resources for the Cub Scout program.- Position Specific Training (classroom)
- This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Check the training calendar, or talk with unit commissioner, district training chair, or the Westside Service Center to find out when and where position specific training is offered.
Outdoor Training

Hazardous Weather (valid for two years)
Required for any outdoor activity- BALOO – Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation
To have a Pack camp-out, at least one unit leader must be BALOO trained – also a great training class for parents with limited camping experience - Outdoor Leadership Skills for Webelos Leaders
Required for leading Webelos campouts. The course is normally a day and a half long and conducted at a local scout camp on a weekend. - CPR / First Aid
- Safe Swim Defense
Required for participating in any Cub Scout swimming activity - Safety Afloat
Required for leading any boating activity
Continuing Education
- Monthly Roundtable Meetings
Exchange ideas with other leaders and learn from district trainers how to make your job easier and your program better for the boys. 6:45pm on the second Thursday of each month at the Santa Monica LDS Stake Center, 3400 Sawtelle Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90066 - Annual Pow Wow / University of Scouting
The pow wow is a “convention” for pack leaders—the Cubmaster should take all leaders to this learning extravaganza. There are sections on games, crafts, skits and puppets, ceremonies, administration, and the Webelos den. It’s a time for parents and all experienced, new, and prospective leaders to share ideas and see what the other packs are doing.
WLACC usually holds the University of Scouting the last Saturday in January. Check the training calendar, or talk with unit commissioner, district training chair, or the Westside Service Center to find out when and where our University of Scouting will be held. - CubCast
CubCast is an audio podcast featuring a variety of how-to and information topics for Cub Scout leaders and parents.
Advanced Training
Wood Badge
Wood Badge for the 21st Century has been developed for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout and Venturing leaders, as well as council and district leaders. The course content, and team and leadership principles introduced apply to Scouters in all leadership positions.
