Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow

The pow wow is an annual get-together of Cub Scout leaders from the entire council. A pow wow is a training conference that takes place in a festive atmosphere.

The pow wow is a “convention” for pack leaders—the Cubmaster should take all leaders to this learning extravaganza. There are sections on games, crafts, skits and puppets, ceremonies, administration, and the Webelos den. It’s a time for parents and all experienced, new, and prospective leaders to share ideas and see what the other packs are doing.

The West Los Angeles County Council usually combines the fun and excitement of pow wow with the University of Scout (training activities for leaders in Boy Scouting and Venturing), and the College of Commissioner Sciences (training for commissioners).

All leaders are encouraged to attend this exciting, fun-filled, and informative training session every year. WLACC usually holds the pow wow the last Saturday in January. Check the training calendar, or talk with your pack trainer, unit commissioner, district training chair, or the Westside Service Center to find out when and where our pow wow or University of Scouting will be held.

University of Scouting

The University of Scouting an annual training event for Boy Scout, Varsity, and Venturing leaders. These training conferences are for leaders from the entire council and take place in a festive atmosphere. Most classes are taught by volunteers who share not just their knowledge but their passion about their subject.

The University of Scouting is a one-day “convention.” Each Scoutmaster should take all leaders to this learning extravaganza. Often, a leader can chose up to three morning and three afternoon sessions. Some classes take two sessions and others are all day.

There could be sessions on new leader training, skills, advancement, activities, ceremonies, and administration. It’s a time for experienced, new, and prospective leaders to share ideas and see what the other troops and packs are doing. Often the ones who learn the most are the volunteer instructors. The way to really learn a topic is to teach it.
